Ashes from Tri-State Crematory to be Returned to Relatives PDF Print E-mail

DECATUR, GA (AP) -- Authorities hope to close the final chapter in the criminal investigation of the Tri-State Crematory by returning ashes to family members who assisted investigators by submitting them for analysis. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says the cremains will be available starting August 17th at the Walker County Civic Center in northwest Georgia.

Law enforcement authorities discovered 334 rotting corpses at the crematory in February 2002. The operator, Ray Brent Marsh, pleaded guilty last November to dumping the corpses and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. He admitted hiding bodies intended for cremation and passing off cement dust as their ashes.

During the investigation, many families who had loved ones sent to the crematory turned over the ashes to investigators. Those who did can retrieve them from the G-B-I. The agency says ashes not retrieved by September 16th will be released to the Walker County coroner for interment in Walker County.
