Crematory operator may get light sentence PDF Print E-mail

Lafayette, GA, Oct. 14 (UPI)

Under a plea deal, a Georgia crematory operator may serve less than five years for keeping some 300 bodies stacked up and stored instead of cremating them.

The courts could still overturn the plea arrangement with prosecutors. If allowed to stand, there would be no criminal trial for Ray Brent Marsh of Lafayette, Ga., who faces 787 felony counts, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday.

Officials said Marsh would receive a sentence of 75 years and serve only 12 years in prison. He could become eligible for parole after serving four years and four months.

Such a deal would offer little or no satisfaction for some of the 334 families of the dead who were sent to Tri-State Crematory to be cremated. The bodies were found strewn around Marsh's property in February and March of 2002.

"The question in my mind is why? Why did he do it?" said Ronald Huff, whose mother's body was among those discovered at Tri-State. Neither the district attorney nor the defense counsel would comment.
