Crematory operator to get 12 years for dumping bodies PDF Print E-mail

ATLANTA (AP) - A former crematory operator accused of dumping 334 bodies and passing off cement dust as their ashes struck a plea deal that calls for as much as 12 years in prison, The Associated Press learned yesterday. Ray Brent Marsh, who is to enter the plea Friday, had faced as much as 8,000 years in a case that shocked the nation more than two years ago when investigators found rotting corpses stacked in sheds and scattered in woods outside his crematory in rural northwest Georgia.

In a letter to victims’ families dated Nov. 10 and obtained by the AP, the prosecutor’s office describes Marsh’s intent to plead guilty but does not give details of the plea agreement.

A source close to the case told the AP that Marsh will plead guilty to theft and abuse of corpse charges and be sentenced to 12 years in prison with credit for seven months he spent in jail. He is free on $159,000 bail but remains under house arrest.

The sentence, which covers all 787 counts against Marsh, 31, will be followed by a probation that would effectively last the rest of his life, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Walker County District Attorney Herbert Franklin and defense lawyer McCracken Poston declined to comment.
