Family settles with funeral home over body in garage

December 14, 2004 NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A settlement has been reached between a former city funeral home and the family of a man whose body had been stashed in a garage. Attorney Edward J. McManus declined Monday to specify the exact amount the family received, but said it was a six-figure settlement. The family had sued after the discovery in June 2001 of five decaying bodies stashed in a garage next to the Wade Funeral home, which was located on Dixwell Avenue in New Haven. The business is now closed. Only one of the five bodies was identified as that of Fred Carmon, a 1998 murder victim. The Carmon family filed the civil suit in Superior Court against the funeral home and its president, Michael Wade. "They're satisfied with the resolution," McManus said. "They look forward to moving beyond these horrible events." Wade was arrested on five counts of improper disposal of a body and operating an unlicensed funeral home.
