Funeral Director Faces Jail for Cremation Fraud PDF Print E-mail

By John Bingham, PA

A funeral director who gave the parents of a dead man the wrong set of ashes after his cremation was warned he could face jail today after being found guilty of fraud. A jury at Oxford Crown Court heard that Barker of Grove, near Wantage, Oxfordshire, found Barker guilty of receiving the money by deception as well as a separate charge of forging the signature of a grieving husband on his wife’s cremation form.

But Barker, who has been a funeral director for 25 years, was cleared on a third charge which also alleged that he had forged a signature on a cremation form.

Lee Kent’s mother, Sheila, spoke of her relief at the verdict outside court. She said: “Now that we know that we did get the wrong ashes, that is closure, but we will never know where our son’s ashes are.”

Her husband Paul told of his reaction on first realising that the ashes, which Barker had scattered on the Berkshire downs in Oxfordshire with the couple present, had not been their son’s remains.

He said: “We were gutted. Just totally gutted. We didn’t know what to say or do.”

Judge Bruce McIntyre released Barker on unconditional bail and ordered him to return to the court on April 1 for sentence.

He warned him: “You should appreciate that you have been convicted of serious offences and all options will be open to me on April 1, including a custodial sentence.”
