Warbington found guilty in mortuary case PDF Print E-mail

When the prosecutor read the guilty verdict, several members of the defendant's family erupted with emotion, crying out and running from the courtroom.

But the only reaction of Jordan Warbington III, son of a longtime Lawrenceville mortician, was to slightly drop his head. Convicted of murdering a friend following a three-week crack cocaine binge and hiding his body in his father's funeral home, Warbington, 37, was sentenced to life in prison.

Prosecutors said Warbington wielded a ceremonial sword and bludgeoned Kenneth Cain, 44, of Lawrenceville. His remains were stuffed into a funeral home body bag and hidden under a bed in the now-defunct Warbington Mortuary.

"My family is at peace now," said Kevin Cain, the victim's younger brother. "[Warbington] never showed any remorse. He killed my brother and then slept in the same house with the body. I feel that justice was done, but still there is not a day that I don't think about what happened to my brother."

Warbington, testifying in his own defense, denied killing Cain. But he did admit to cleaning up splattered blood at the funeral home and hiding the body.

Warbington testified he had a 15-year friendship with Cain, who lived near the funeral home. Warbington, a father of three, said he started living at the funeral home three weeks before Cain's death because he was having domestic problems. During that time, Warbington said he smoked crack with Cain on a daily basis.

Cain was supposed to be selling the drugs that allegedly had been provided by an acquaintance named Rico. Instead, the two smoked $1,000 worth of Rico's cocaine without paying the dealer, Warbington said.

On the day Cain died, the two smoked crack until the early morning, Warbington said. Warbington said he left to run some errands and returned to find Cain's body in the employee break room. Warbington said he panicked and decided to hide the body.

"I still really feel that the real killer is still out there," said Nate Gulleutt, Warbington's uncle. "I think the jury struggled with the fact that he admitted to hiding the body.

"I think they felt that they had to find him guilty of something."

The jury may have been persuaded by the testimony of Warbington's father. Jordan Warbington Jr. testified he found the body and immediately reported it to the police. He told officers he had a phone conversation with his son, who admitted he had hit Cain in self-defense.

Defense attorney Robert Walker asked Warbington's father several times if he was sure about what his son had said. Walker suggested the father had misheard and the younger Warbington hid the body to protect himself.

But Warbington's father was steadfast. "I know what I heard," he testified.

After hearing the verdict, Warbington addressed Cain's family, apologizing for hiding the body. But he remained adamant that he did not kill his friend.

Warbington will appeal, Gulleutt said.

"It may be better for him next time," Gulleutt said. "This is just very tough for both families.

"But when you are messing around with drugs, tragic things can happen."
