A Chulalongkorn University lecturer yesterday filed a complaint with police accusing three pathologists at the university’s Department of Forensic Medicine of falsifying documents related to the cost of autopsy services. Assoc Professor Dr Supoj Chaemsuwan told the Crime Suppression Division that his three colleagues, whose names have been withheld, had made fraudulent reimbursements totalling Bt303,000.

He said they claimed to have prepared histopathology slides on 202 bodies for advanced forensic examination in order to reimburse the payment for such work.

But Supoj said no histopathology slides existed to correspond with the records signed by those doctors from November 2003 to February.

Pathologists are usually paid Bt1,500 for each slide of human tissue, he added.

One of the three accused doctors said he had no idea why Supoj had filed such a complaint. He pleaded his innocence and said neither he nor the other two doctors had ever been investigated before.

He and Supoj have had conflicts at work, the doctor said, but he did not think Supoj would come up with such a “peculiar” claim.

Prior to filing the police complaint, Supoj said the Faculty of Medicine had conducted an investigation into the case and unofficially ruled in favour of the three doctors.

He then decided to bring the case to the police.

The faculty’s public relations division said a press conference on the issue would be held today.
