The co-owner and operator of a Carlsbad cemetery is accused of digging up a woman's cremated remains amid a payment dispute with her family.

Officials say Bill Crouch was arrested on Wednesday by the Eddy County Sheriff's Department. He's charged with disturbing marked burial grounds.

Crouch was released from jail after posting a 7,500 bond.

The arrest came after a hearing by the state Thanatopractice Board on allegations of abuse, neglect, fraud and unprofessional business practices by Crouch and his wife, Gladys, who own the cemetery.

Aubrey Lewis had testified that Crouch disinterred his mother's remains for alleged nonpayment. But Lewis says he and his sister left a check with the Crouches at the cemetery office.
