Funeral home where decomposing bodies were found burns in suspicious fire

Sept 5, 2004
Associated Press

TOLEDO, Ohio - A funeral home where eight decomposing bodies were found more than a year ago was damaged by a fire that police are investigating as arson, authorities said. Fire Chief Eric Renzhofer said the fire Saturday night at the former Sherrill-Harden Funeral Home caused $150,000 in damage. The vacant, two-story building appeared to have been broken into and the fire seemed to have started in several places inside, Renzhofer said.

No one was injured in the fire, which started shortly before midnight.

The funeral home closed after the eight bodies were found on June 20, 2003. They were discovered after the state received a tip that the home held bodies that were not properly disposed of.

Some bodies had been gnawed by rodents and were left for months. One body had been at the home since 1996. The owner was sentenced to 60 days in jail and the state revoked his license.
