Ghanaian university, family tussle over `donated` corpse PDF Print E-mail

Accra, Ghana, 03/12 - A High Court here has halted the funeral service of a 72-year-old Ghanaian planned for Saturday after his family filed a petition disputing claims that the man had `willed` his corpse to the University of Ghana Medical School. The wife of the late E.K. Commey and the university have had to postpone a scheduled church service at the mortuary of the Medical School after which the School would take possession of body.

The court upheld arguments of the family for a motion to halt the ceremony on Saturday pending a hearing into the case.

The family is disputing documents submitted by the Medical School indicating that Commey had requested before his death that his body be donated to the School in response to an appeal to the public to donate dead bodies for academic purposes.

The family is also arguing that under the custom of the deceased the body belonged to them after his death, and not the wife.

The family is seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining the wife of the deceased and the Medical School from carrying out the purported will of the deceased.

It also wants the Medical School and the wife of the deceased to release the body of Mr Commey to the head of family for traditional burial rights to be performed.
