Man accused of stealing credit card from corpse PDF Print E-mail

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A worker under contract with the state medical examiner’s office faces multiple charges for allegedly stealing a credit card from a corpse and going on an $1,800 spending spree. Francis Benoit stole the card from the man’s body before he moved the victim from Rhode Island Hospital to the state medical examiner’s office, which was to perform an autopsy, authorities said. He was working for Ocean State Transfer, a private livery service that moves bodies to the medical examiner’s office for autopsy.

The deceased’s widow got the credit card bill, and noticed at least some of the purchases occurred a day after her husband had died. She alerted police last month, and officers identified him with the help of surveillance video from stores where Benoit allegedly bought the goods, according to the state police.

Most of the merchandise was found and returned, said Lt. LeRoy Rose, state police assistant detective commander.

Benoit, 31, faces eight felony counts of fraudulent use of a credit card and one count each of larceny and forgery, Rose said. He was released on personal recognizance, and is due back in court on May 11.

Benoit, a Coventry resident, has been fired, said Robert Marshall Jr., spokesman for the state Health Department.
