WACO -- A mortuary employee has been charged with stealing medicine from bodies being transported for autopsies.

Jeff Stout, 53, was arrested at his home in Hewitt, a Waco suburb, and charged with one felony count of possession of a controlled substance, six felony counts of possession of a dangerous drug with intent to deliver and one felony count of tampering with evidence.

Acting on a search warrant, Hewitt police and McLennan County deputies searched Stouts home and found ziprazidone, trazodone and hydrocodone, officials said. Hewitt police Capt. Tuck Saunders would not say how much of each drug was found.

Saunders said Stout, who worked for Waco Mortuary Services, allegedly stole the medications when he was transporting bodies for autopsies.

Terry Owens, owner of Waco Mortuary, said he had no indication that Stout, who worked for him for about seven years, may have been stealing while on the job. He said Stout's arrest last week has hurt business.

"Were still in shock. That is absolutely not tolerated," Owens said. "This has already had an effect on us, and were just trying to overcome it. It's a terrible thing and I'm just flabbergasted. I cant even explain how I feel."

Stout remained in the McLennan County Jail this morning, with bail set at $43,500.
