Eastern Cape police and health department officials are probing the apparent muti mutilation of a corpse in the mortuary of Lusikisiki's St Elizabeth Hospital.
Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said the 29-year-old woman died at the hospital on Friday after being admitted earlier with an illness.

Her body was kept in the hospital mortuary over the weekend.

When relatives got an undertaker to collect it on Monday morning, it was discovered that her left breast and genitals had been cut off.

"We suspect that these were removed for muti purposes, because they were not removed accidentally," Kupelo said.

"It's the first incident of this nature in our hospitals, and we will leave no stone unturned in making sure the perpetrators are brought to book.

"Something like this, we regard as inhuman."

Nurses, porters and mortuary staff who were on duty over the weekend were being questioned.
