Police arrested Jeffrey Lang, 38, of 3726 SE 14th St., Wednesday afternoon. after he attempted to sell more grave markers to a local scrap metal company.

Last week, police said a scrap metal buyer became suspicious when someone tried to sell 20 military grave markers.

A man who monitors one of Des Moines' oldest cemeteries, Woodland Cemetery, said more than 100 markers were missing, including some from the graves of World War I and Civil War veterans.

Lucrative prices for scrap metal have fueled thefts of metal materials from construction sites and businesses. The thieves –- sometimes called urban miners – apparently had begun to steal the metal military markers from Des Moines graves.

"It makes me sick," Dave Debolt, executive director of Polk County Veteran Affairs, said last week. "We give these out to families of veterans as flag holders. They should not end up at a scrap metal place. Someone is stealing them. It’s just not right."

After someone tried to sell another bunch of grave markers, the scrap metal business proprietors contacted police, who were able to track down Long and arrest him.

He was charged with third degree theft and taken to the Polk County Jail.

The theft of metal, however, continues.

Des Moines police are reporting today the theft of $1,400 worth of copper tubing.

A representative of Taylor Industries, 1533 Euclid Ave., contacted officers on Thursday afternoon to report the theft of tubing from a storage locker.

The copper should be easy to spot. It's in 20-foot lengths.

No arrests have been reported. A lock was cut off the door to the storage shed, police said.
