Piedmont Cemetery Board offers $3K reward in vandalism case PDF Print E-mail

PIEDMONT, SD - Members of the Piedmont Cemetery Board are offering a $3,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in the recent cemetery vandalism. On July 10 and July 11 vandals struck at the Piedmont Cemetery, toppling nearly all of the headstones and monuments, and destroying several grave markers for veterans from the Civil War and Spanish-American War. On Wednesday, July 19, several Piedmont residents organized a clean-up effort and, with the help of West River Monuments and Rausch Monuments of Rapid City, had the cemetery back in order in time for a funeral that was held that Friday.

But cemetery board members and residents from the Tri-State area want to make sure that the vandalism does not happen again, and that the culprits are brought to justice. According to Piedmont Cemetery board member John Honerkamp the board has received reward donations from as far east as Watertown, and as far west as Wyoming. So far, he said they have received $3,000 in donations for the reward, but that number could go up as donations keep coming in.

While Piedmont residents are offering rewards to find the vandals who destroyed their cemetery, Meade County Investigator Caleb Deyo is searching for a vehicle which may be connected to the case. The vehicle is described as a late 80s to early 90s maroon or dark red colored Cadillac with several decals in the back window. According to a recent press release from the Meade County Sheriff's Office, the vehicle was seen in the area with four passengers inside around the time the vandalism occurred.

Anyone with information regarding either the possible suspect vehicle or individuals who may have been involved with this crime should contact Deyo at 605-347-2681, or 1-800-640-6649.

It is a time when one's spirit is subdued and sad, one knows not why; when the past seems a storm-swept desolation, life a vanity and a burden, and the future but a way to death.
