Plano Mom Moving Into Mausoleum PDF Print E-mail

(CBS 11 News)

PLANO, TX-- A Plano mother is taking up residence in a strange place: a mausoleum.

Denise Ferito says thieves are continuing to damage her already-broken heart by stealing flowers and mementos from the grave of her son Daniel. She said the last straw was this past weekend, when they took a cross she had placed with flowers at the gravesite shortly after he was interred. Ferito says she is temporarily moving into the mausoleum to protect her son's grave from further damage or thefts.

The young man died after a single car crash in rural Denton County on January 9, 2001. It's believed another driver or animal forced him off the road.

Ferito is one of a group of friends who water flowers at the graves of each other’s loved ones and tidy up wilting leaves to keep them looking nice.

Ferito says they've each lost a dozen or more floral bouquets from the indoor setting. The building sits quietly tucked away in a back corner of the Restland Cemetery facility in north Dallas.

The cemetery is aware of the problem. The staff is looking into several possible solutions, including a video system and keyless door pad. However the director of operations, John Ebey, says they are trying to find a solution that is affordable, does not detract from the aesthetics of the facility, and will not impede access for those wishing to visit loved ones.

Ebey also says the problem of stolen items from graves is a national problem. Cemeteries are large open areas often covering hundreds of acres, and security can be difficult.

Ebey says despite the challenges he knows families expect and deserve a solution.
