Teacher, students crept into vault PDF Print E-mail

A Bland County high school teacher faces a felony charge after allegedly sneaking into a cemetery vault with two students and taking photos of them handling a corpse's bones.

"It's not anything anyone would call school-related," said Dennis Lee, the commonwealth's attorney in Tazewell County, where authorities said the incident occurred. "It's just bizarre."

Candace Longworth, 31, of Bastian has been suspended from her job as a biology teacher at Rocky Gap High School in Bland, according to the principal. She has been charged with disturbing and defiling a dead person from a place of burial. The teenagers have been charged as juveniles.

Lee said investigators learned of Longworth's alleged role in the Sept. 9 entry of a vault in a historic cemetery in the town of Pocahontas when at least one of the two teenage girls began showing pictures of themselves inside the vault holding the bones.

The vault, which is partially below ground, is in a cemetery established in 1884 for 114 coal miners killed in a mine explosion in the town, which is in Tazewell. Authorities allege the teacher and students entered the vault through a large crack.

Longworth, who is free on bond and has an Oct. 23 preliminary hearing, could not be reached for comment. Rocky Gap Principal Robert Morehead said Longworth has been suspended pending the outcome of the legal proceedings. "I really can't say anything else about it," he said. "It's something that happened on her own time, on the weekend, in another county. It has nothing to do with this school."

In addition to the felony defiling charge, Longworth faces two misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The felony charge carries a possible sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

Lee said the trip to the vault had nothing to do with the occult or Halloween but declined to elaborate further, saying only, "It sort of boggles the mind as to why someone would be involved in this."

Epitaphs are cheap, and they do a poor chap a world of good after he is dead, especially if he had hard luck while he was alive. I wish they were used more.
